Cryogenic turboexpander overhaul and repair.

The turboexpander produces the refrigeration that keeps a small air separation unit cold. When it fails, production stops. I have overhauled and rebuilt a ~120,000 rpm cryogenic turboexpander on a Russian-built ASU, and I can help you plan and carry out yours.

Signs a turboexpander needs attention

  • Rising vibration or new noise.
  • Bearing temperatures trending up.
  • Falling refrigeration: the plant struggles to cool down or hold temperatures, and output drops.
  • Speed instability, trips, or seal leakage.

Catching these early is the difference between a planned overhaul and an unplanned stop with damaged parts.

What an overhaul involves

  • Assessment: operating history, symptoms and the condition data you have.
  • Disassembly and inspection: rotor and wheels, bearings, seals and clearances, with findings recorded.
  • Repair plan: what to replace, what to repair, what to source, and balancing by a qualified shop where required.
  • Reassembly: to specified clearances, with cleanliness appropriate for cryogenic and oxygen service.
  • Restart and monitoring: controlled run-up and close observation of vibration and temperatures.
Why experience matters here: at around 120,000 rpm, small errors in clearance, balance or cleanliness become failures quickly. This is work for someone who has done it, with careful records at every step.

Questions

Which turboexpanders have you worked on?

The cryogenic turboexpander of a Russian-built K-0.15 air separation unit, running at roughly 120,000 rpm, which I overhauled and rebuilt. The diagnostic and overhaul logic applies to similar small high-speed cryogenic expanders.

Do you balance rotors yourself?

High-speed rotor balancing needs specialist equipment. I plan the overhaul, inspect and prepare the parts, and coordinate balancing with a qualified shop where needed, then handle reassembly and restart.

Can you assess a turboexpander remotely first?

Yes. Symptoms, operating data, vibration or temperature trends and photos of any damage are often enough to judge whether an overhaul is needed and what to prepare.
